Which is why it was such a good parody. Just a little over the top, but still believable. The faulty ignition, malfunctioning airbag, knocking and backfiring engine, rattling interior, and gas filler that seemed to drain directly into the engine all added to the commentary on where Detroit was at the time.

welcome to ‘70s Fords . Even the so-called “sportier” ones had deep fender flares.

Though by ‘71 the Cougar had turned into a PLC, even if you could get one with a 429 CJ that year.
